UP ranked number one in peak power demand supply; energy minister cites 24x7 goal and renewables push

Uttar Pradesh energy minister AK Sharma announced a historic transformation in the state's power sector, claiming UP leads in peak power demand supply and is moving toward 24x7 uninterrupted supply. He highlighted increases in thermal capacity, overall power availability, consumer connections, and renewable energy milestones, including rooftop solar and bio-energy progress.

Why It Matters

If UP sustains its reported gains in reliability and renewable capacity, it could influence national energy policy, tariffs, and rural electricity access strategies.

May 9, 2026: minister's media briefing on transformation and renewables

May 9, 2026

During a media interaction, Energy Minister AK Sharma claimed a historic transformation and UP's emergence as a national energy hub with a push for green energy and 24x7 supply. He stated that thermal capacity had risen from 5,160 MW in 2017 to 9,120 MW, and overall power availability increased from 11,803 MW to 22,000 MW. He noted peak demand rose from about 13,000 MW under earlier governments to nearly 30,000 MW in the last four years, with a record 31,468 MW in 2025 and 29,475 MW supplied on April 28, 2026. He added that the number of electricity consumers grew by 3.7 crore since 2017 (from 1.8 crore), with about 50 lakh new connections in the last four years, and cited major expansion in transmission and distribution: replacement of 30 lakh damaged poles, laying over 1.65 lakh km AB cables, and installation or upgrading of 10.71 lakh transformers. In renewables, UP led in daily PM Surya Ghar Yojana installations in April 2026, Lucknow was the top performing district, the state crossed 4 lakh rooftop solar installations with around 1,400 MW capacity (third nationwide), Ayodhya became the country’s first Solar City, and UP led bio-energy with 25 CBG plants producing 240 tonnes daily. He asserted tariffs had not increased in six years and farmers received free electricity.
