Proposal to grant bonus marks for sportspersons submitted to state government for approval

May 15, 2026

The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UP Board) has proposed a new policy to award bonus marks to outstanding sportspersons in the state. The proposal, which has been sent to the state government for approval, outlines that students appearing in high school (Class 10) and intermediate (Class 12) examinations may receive additional marks ranging from 5 to 20 based on sporting achievements. Specific allocations include: 5 marks for top three finishes at state level; 7 marks for participation and 10 marks for top-three finishes at national level; 15 marks for participation and up to 20 marks for top-three finishes at international level. Certificates confirming participation or achievements must be issued on or before January 31 of the examination year and must be from recognised events. The policy excludes compartment candidates. For Class 10, bonus marks would appear on the marksheet-cum-certificate; for Class 12, they would be added to the total score. Bonus marks may also serve as grace marks in up to two subjects for students who fail, and only the highest-benefit certificate would be considered. The initiative covers events under SGFI, NCC, Scouts and Guides, and recognizes performance in Classes 9 and 11 with benefits carried forward to Class 10 and 12 examinations.
