Team from AIIMS-Delhi to probe maternal deaths in Kota, new SOPs on anvil

Birla emphasized maintaining public trust in government hospitals and instructed authorities to strengthen cleanliness mechanisms, improve emergency and nursing services, and ensure timely and high-quality treatment, with strict action against personnel found negligent.

During her inspection of MBS College, Rathore expressed displeasure over deficiencies in practical training of trainee nursing staff, particularly in basic medical procedures. She directed officials to issue a notice to the private nursing college and instructed that trainee nursing personnel work only under the supervision of senior doctors until they acquire adequate practical proficiency.

She reviewed adolescent health programmes and urged improvements in counselling, examination, and treatment services for adolescents, focusing on holistic health development.

While reviewing paediatric healthcare services, she stressed sensitivity, alertness, and prompt treatment, and directed stronger disease screening for children and postpartum women.

She directed doctors to strengthen monitoring of high-risk pregnancies and ensure regular screening of postpartum women and newborns to identify complications early and to improve prenatal and postnatal care.

At JK Lone Hospital, Rathore visited the labour room, post-operative ward, paediatric ward, and pathology laboratory, interacting with admitted patients and attendants to obtain feedback on treatment, cleanliness, and facilities.

Earlier in the day, Gayatri Rathore conducted inspections at JK Lone Hospital and MBS Hospital, reviewing maternal and child health care services, treatment systems, and medical arrangements.

Birla directed the divisional commissioner to constitute a committee under his chairmanship to inspect all government hospitals in the district, reviewing infrastructure, cleanliness, nursing arrangements, emergency services, and other operational systems before preparing a roadmap for improvements.

The AIIMS-led expert team will submit a detailed report identifying deficiencies and recommending institutional reforms and SOPs for hospitals in Kota and Bundi region.

Birla described the deaths as an extremely sensitive matter, directed officials to fix accountability and ensure strict adherence to medical protocols. At a high-level review meeting in Kota on May 12, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla announced that an expert team from AIIMS-Delhi and other central medical institutions will investigate postpartum deaths and reported infections at Kota's New Medical College Hospital. The team will inspect operating theatre infection-control systems, surgical procedures, and overall hospital management in Kota and Bundi districts, and will frame new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and propose institutional reforms.
