7 Events
January 2024 – Indefinite hospital order
Following the killings, Calocane was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after pleading guilty to three counts of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility, and to three counts of attempted murder.
June 13, 2023 – Nottingham killings
Calocane fatally stabbed Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates, and attempted to kill three others on 13 June 2023.
February 2022 – Continued involvement of Josephine Baker
From February 2022, team leader Josephine Baker remained involved in Calocane’s care. Baker later described Calocane as having become intimidating and no longer safe to be treated in the community, reflecting ongoing concerns about risk and safety.
January 2022 – Subsequent MHA assessment ordered
Eight days after the initial assessment, a further Mental Health Act (MHA) assessment was ordered as part of ongoing monitoring and evidence gathering by the crisis team.
January 2022 – Hostage incident and initial assessment
Police were called after Calocane put a flatmate into a headlock and held him hostage at their Faraday Road flat in Nottingham. The following day, Dr Mike Skelton, a consultant psychiatrist, decided Calocane did not pose a serious enough risk to be detained and allowed him to return home. At the door-side review, Skelton described feeling safety concerns and noted Calocane appeared clearly psychotic. Calocane was reported as polite and calm enough to have invited staff into the property, although a police warrant was used to remove him for assessment with 15 officers deployed. Skelton was aware Calocane had not been on his medication despite his claims of adherence, and Calocane took one tablet in front of him; Skelton said one tablet does not reduce risk. The crisis team then took over care under a community plan, with monitoring and evidence gathering continuing.
June 23, 2020 – Baker visits Calocane between Highbury Hospital spells
Crisis care team leader Josephine Baker visited Calocane on 23 June 2020, between his two spells at Highbury Hospital that year. In the days before the visit, Calocane told the inquiry he was not experiencing hallucinations or abnormal thoughts. Baker described the visit as involving Calocane being open about his experiences with hearing voices and managing them since discharge.
2020 – Two spells at Highbury Hospital
Calocane had two spells at Highbury Hospital during 2020. The record notes the existence of multiple hospital spells within that year as part of his treatment history.
