One in six vehicles in Pune non-compliant with re-registration norms: Data
Data from the Pune Regional Transport Office shows a large share of ageing vehicles have not re-registered after 15 years. About 7.29 lakh vehicles have crossed the threshold, but only 44,800 have paid the environment tax and renewed registration, leaving roughly 6.83 lakh non-compliant (about one in six).
Why It Matters
The high level of non-compliance points to enforcement gaps and potential risks to road safety and pollution levels in Pune.

Officials say non-compliant vehicles are not necessarily illegal; enforcement drives planned
Deputy Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale said regular drives are conducted and action is taken against vehicles exceeding their permissible lifespan without valid documents. He added that while compliance with environment tax and re-registration norms remains low, many non-compliant vehicles may be off the roads or located in rural areas, making identification difficult. 'We are working on improving enforcement mechanisms,' he said.
