At the principal bench hearing, Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel directed a detailed reply from the Uttarakhand government and impleaded the principal chief conservator of forests (head of forest force) as a party to the proceedings. The tribunal noted that the additional affidavit lacked complete information on remediation projects. A two-month deadline was set for filing the detailed response. It was also noted that the Uttarakhand State Wetland Authority had informed that Nainital Lake does not fall under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, as the area is governed by the Indian Forest Act and the Forest Conservation Act. The matter will be next heard on July 14, 2026.

Petition letter dated October 14, 2024 submitted to NGT
Hemant Singh Gonia and others forwarded a petition to the NGT alleging serious environmental degradation of Nainital Lake due to discharge of untreated sewage and waste via a drain from Bhotia Market toward the Naina Devi Temple area; the petition stated that the lake receives sewage, garbage and plastic waste, threatening aquatic life and the local ecosystem. The petition was later registered as an original application in December 2024.
