China to ban drone sales in Beijing citing security concerns
Beijing will ban the sale, rental, and import of drones and require permits, registration, and training for operation under new rules taking effect May 1, 2026. The policy follows a 2025 no-drone zone and a March 2026 approval of restrictions.
Why It Matters
The move tightens urban drone regulation in China, potentially affecting the large domestic drone market and the development of the low-altitude economy in Beijing and beyond.

Beijing enacts comprehensive drone sale and operation rules
Drones and key components will be prohibited from being sold, rented or brought into Beijing. Drone owners must register their devices with the police. Drones must be registered before they can be brought in and out of Beijing, and if users send their drones out of the city for repair, they must pick up the device in person. All outdoor drone flights require prior approval, and drone users must complete an online training session and pass a test on drone regulations. Exceptions exist for approved purposes such as counter-terrorism and disaster relief.
