At around 9:15 am, Sunanda, one of the daughters, opened the door and found her mother lying unconscious in the bedroom with a blood-stained cloth stuffed into her mouth and her hands and legs tied. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Medical examination noted abrasions on the lips, ligature marks on the wrists, and a bite injury to the tongue tip.

Around 1:00 am, CCTV footage reportedly captured three unidentified men entering the bungalow through the main gate. They exited between 2:00 am and 2:30 am. Police say the murder of Tanuja was around 2:00 am, with her hands and legs tied and a blood-stained cloth stuffed into her mouth.

May 7, 2026: Thursday night — Tanuja’s bedtime; Kalpana’s role discussed

On the night of May 7, 2026, Tanuja Ranjan retired to her bedroom on the first floor as two daughters slept on the second floor. Kalpana, a Nepalese domestic worker employed by the family for over a year and living in the same house, was observed to be familiar with the household routines. May 2, 2026: Ray travels to Bengaluru for personal work

Vinay Ranjan Ray, a retired IPS officer (1986 batch) who served as DG, Prisons, until 2019, had travelled to Bengaluru for personal work about a week before the incident. Police say Kalpana, the Nepalese domestic helper who had been with the family for over a year and lived in the same house, planned the murder and helped the gang gain entry into the house.
