Aroor-Thuravur elevated highway likely to be commissioned by August
The 12.75-km Aroor-Thuravur elevated highway (NH 66) is about 90% complete, with an August 2026 opening anticipated. The project, which would be the longest elevated highway in the country supported by single pillars, faces minor remaining works and coordination with utilities and drains. A February 2026 deadline had previously been set by NHAI.
Why It Matters
The project represents a major infrastructure upgrade along NH 66, potentially easing traffic and improving connectivity, while requiring significant coordination with local utilities and water drainage systems.

May 6, 2026: Progress update and expected commissioning
As of May 6, 2026, about 90% of the ₹2,200-crore elevated structure is complete on the 12.75-km NH 66 corridor from Aroor to Thuravur. Girders and deck slabs have been installed across most portions, except a short stretch at Aroor where relocation of extra high-tension power lines is needed. The remaining work includes painting the structure and completing drainage works on both sides. The NHAI projects that the elevated highway could be opened to motorists from August 2026, and the length will be extended by about 210 metres southward from Thuravur with around a dozen more pillars being added. The project is also coordinating with local bodies on drain construction funding, following a joint inspection that will lead to a formal estimate. Earlier measures included funds to upgrade side roads, relocation of drinking water pipelines by the Kerala Water Authority, and relocation of posts and transformers by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). The elevated highway is described as the longest of its kind in the country to be supported by single pillars.
