₹2 crore project to address chronic waterlogging at Bharat Mandapam in the works
The ITPO plans an underground sump reservoir and a high-capacity pumping system near Bharat Mandapam to mitigate waterlogging, at an estimated ₹2 crore. The project aims to divert rainwater from Gate No. 3 to a nearby municipal drain and is expected to take about three months, though unlikely to be finished before the monsoon.
Why It Matters
Waterlogging around Bharat Mandapam and Pragati Maidan has disrupted operations during heavy rainfall; the project follows prior drainage and tunnel repair efforts intended to improve stormwater management in the area.

ITPO to develop underground sump reservoir and high-pressure pumping near Bharat Mandapam
The India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) is developing an underground sump reservoir and a high-pressure pumping system near Bharat Mandapam to address chronic waterlogging. The project is estimated to cost around ₹2 crore and will channel excess rainwater from Gate No. 3 to a nearby municipal drain. It is expected to take around three months and is unlikely to be completed before the monsoon. The reservoir will excavate about 1,000 cubic metres and be fitted with five high-capacity submersible pumps at different levels to continuously drain collected water.
PWD approves extensive repairs at Pragati Maidan tunnel following seepage defects
HT reported that the PWD approved extensive repairs at the Pragati Maidan tunnel after seepage-related defects. Proposed measures included pressure grouting, chemical injection, crack sealing, and application of waterproofing membranes at vulnerable points, with an estimated cost of around ₹4 crore. The work also involved restoration of damaged concrete surfaces and protective coatings to prevent seepage during the monsoon.
